Three-Narrator Ahadith 133
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man being supported between his two sons as he walked. He asked, “What is the matter with this man?” They replied, “He has vowed to walk [to the Kaʿbah on foot].” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah has absolutely no need for this man to torment himself.” Then he commanded him to ride, and he did.

Musnad Aḥmad 133

according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Chain: Aḥmad → Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy al-Sulamī al-Baṣrī: thiqa thabt, d. 194 AH. (2) Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (6701); Muslim (1642); Aḥmad (12038). The narration is a principal text in the chapters on vows (nudhūr). A vow to undertake an act of obedience is binding, but a vow whose content is mere self-affliction carries no obligation, since Allah is beyond benefit from a servant's hardship. The verb yuhādā describes a man walking supported between two others, unable to bear his own weight, which shows that the vow had passed from difficulty into harm.
