مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 132
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The true dream of a believer is one of forty-six parts of prophethood.”

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «رُؤْيَا الْمُؤْمِنِ جُزْءٌ مِنْ سِتَّةٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ جُزْءًا مِنَ النُّبُوَّةِ».

Chain: Aḥmad → Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy al-Sulamī al-Baṣrī: thiqa thabt, d. 194 AH. (2) Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (6983); Muslim (2263); Aḥmad (12037). Scholars have explained the fraction as follows: revelation descended upon the Prophet ﷺ over twenty-three years, and the earliest phase of it took the form of true dreams lasting six months, which is precisely one forty-sixth of twenty-three years. Other proportions are transmitted in parallel narrations, and Ibn Ḥajar holds that these vary according to the state of the dreamer rather than contradicting one another. The intent is not to attribute any share of prophethood to the believer, since prophethood ended with the Prophet ﷺ, but to affirm that the true dream shares with revelation the quality of conveying knowledge from Allah.
