Three-Narrator Ahadith 128
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The [clan of] Banū Salamah intended to relocate from their houses and settle near the mosque. News of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he disliked the idea of the outskirts of Madinah being left deserted, so he said to them: “O Banū Salamah, do you not expect reward from Allah for every step you take to the mosque?” They said, “Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah.” So they remained where they were.

Musnad Aḥmad 128

according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Chain: Aḥmad → Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy al-Sulamī al-Baṣrī: thiqa thabt, d. 194 AH. (2) Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (655); Muslim (665); Aḥmad (12033). The narration is a foundational text for the ruling that reward accrues for each step taken toward the mosque, and that distance of residence is itself a source of merit rather than a deprivation. Banū Salamah were a clan of the Khazraj whose quarter lay at some remove from the Prophet's Mosque. The Prophet's ﷺ concern that Madinah not be left ʿāriya, stripped bare at its edges, reflects a further consideration of settlement and defense: the outlying quarters formed the city's perimeter, and their abandonment would have left it exposed.
