Three-Narrator Ahadith 127
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The call to prayer was announced. Those whose houses were near the mosque went home [to perform ablution], while those whose houses were far away remained [where they were]. A stone basin was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but it was too small for him to spread his full hand in it, so he brought his fingers together [into the basin]. Then all the remaining men performed their ablution [from that water]. Ḥumayd said: Anas was asked how many they were, and he replied, “Eighty or more.”

Musnad Aḥmad 127

Chain: Aḥmad → [Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy and Yazīd ibn Hārūn, both] from Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAdiyy al-Sulamī al-Baṣrī: thiqa thabt; a leading Baṣran transmitter and one of the principal students of Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl and Shuʿba. Died 194 AH. (2) Yazīd ibn Hārūn ibn Zādhān al-Sulamī al-Wāsiṭī: thiqa mutqin ʿābid; the imām of Wāsiṭ in his generation and among the teachers of Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal. Born 118 AH, died 206 AH. (3) Ḥumayd ibn Abī Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa; a Tābiʿī who heard directly from Anas ibn Mālik. Ibn Ḥajar notes that he engaged in tadlīs, and that a portion of what he relates from Anas he in fact took from Thābit al-Bunānī; his narrations from Anas are nonetheless accepted where they are corroborated in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, as here. Died 142 or 143 AH. (4) Anas ibn Mālik ibn al-Naḍr al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī: Companion; servant of the Prophet ﷺ, died at Baṣrah ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (200) and (3572); Muslim (2279); Aḥmad (12032). The narration is among the best attested of the prophetic miracles (muʿjizāt), namely the multiplication of water flowing from between the fingers of the Prophet ﷺ. The mikhḍab mentioned is a shallow basin, here carved from stone; the detail that it was too small for an outspread hand explains why the Prophet ﷺ drew his fingers together, and the number of those who performed ablution from it, given as eighty or more, indicates the scale of the increase.
