Three-Narrator Ahadith 11
Sufyān reported from ʿAmr [ibn Dīnār], who heard Ibn ʿUmar
“We used to practice mukhābara [sharecropping], and we saw nothing wrong with it, until Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj claimed that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) had prohibited it. So we abandoned it.”

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 4586).
Isnād: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← ʿAmr ibn Dīnār ← ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar. Rijāl: Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ. ʿAmr ibn Dīnār al-Makkī (d. 126 AH): thiqah ḥāfiẓ; one of the great scholars of Mecca, praised by al-Bukhārī and others. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar: Companion. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, nos. 2339, 2347; Muslim, no. 1547; Abū Dāwūd, no. 3390; al-Tirmidhī, no. 1384; al-Nasāʾī, no. 3893; Ibn Mājah, no. 2458. Al-mukhābara is a contract by which land is leased for cultivation in exchange for a share of the produce. Imām Aḥmad held that mukhābara remained permissible, viewing Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj’s report as weak, while al-Shāfiʿī held that it was abrogated by this ḥadīth. Abū Dāwūd records a report from Zayd ibn Thābit also prohibiting it; however, the Prophet’s contract with the people of Khaybar on the same basis is strong evidence for permissibility with proper conditions.
