Abu Huraira reported God’s messenger as saying, “The ancient prophetical sunna (The Arabic word is fitra. Its basic meaning is the manner in which one is created. It is also used for the religion of Islam. But in this tradition the meaning is said to be the sunna followed by the prophets from of old, and therefore it is translated above in accordance with this explanation) has five characteristics :
circumcision, shaving with a razor, clipping the moustache, paring the nails, and plucking out hairs under the armpit.”
(Bukhari and Muslim.)

" الْفِطْرَةُ خَمْسٌ: الْخِتَانُ وَالِاسْتِحْدَادُ وَقَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الْأَظْفَارِ ونتفُ الإِبطِ "

Malik transmitted it.

Sunan Abi Dawud 54
Narrated Ammar b. Yasir:
The Apostle of Allaah ( sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ) said : The rinsing of mouth and snuffing up water in the nose are acts that bear the characteristics of fitrah (nature). He then narrated a similar tradition (as reported by Aishah), but he did not mention the words "letting the beard grow". He added the words "circumcision" and "sprinkling water on the private part of the body". He did not mention the words "cleansing oneself after easing".
Abu Dawud said : A similar tradition has been reported on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas. He mentioned only five sunnahs all relating to the head, one of them being parting of the hair; it did not include wearing the beard.
Abu Dawud said: The tradition as reported by Hammad has also been transmitted by Talq b. Habib , Mujahid, and Bakr b. 'Abd Allaah b. al-Muzani as their own statement ( not as a tradition from the Prophet, sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ).They did not mention the words "letting the beard grow". The version transmitted by Muhammad b. Abd Allaah b. Abi Maryam, Abu Salamah, and Abu Hurairah from the Prophet ( sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ) mentions the words "letting the beard grow". A similar tradition has been reported by Ibrahim al-Nakha'i. He mentioned the words "wearing the beard and circumcision."

Yahya said that he had

that one mutilates oneself."

Abu Musa reported:
There cropped up a difference of opinion between a group of Muhajirs (Emigrants and a group of Ansar (Helpers) (and the point of dispute was) that the Ansar said: The bath (because of sexual intercourse) becomes obligatory only-when the semen spurts out or ejaculates. But the Muhajirs said: When a man has sexual intercourse (with the woman), a bath becomes obligatory (no matter whether or not there is seminal emission or ejaculation). Abu Musa said: Well, I satisfy you on this (issue). He (Abu Musa, the narrator) said: I got up (and went) to 'A'isha and sought her permission and it was granted, and I said to her: 0 Mother, or Mother of the Faithful, I want to ask you about a matter on which I feel shy. She said: Don't feel shy of asking me about a thing which you can ask your mother, who gave you birth, for I am too your mother. Upon this I said: What makes a bath obligatory for a person? She replied: You have come across one well informed! The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: When anyone sits amidst four parts (of the woman) and the circumcised parts touch each other a bath becomes obligatory.

Mishkat al-Masabih 379, 380
‘A'isha reported God’s messenger as saying, “Ten characteristics belong to the religion of Islam:
clipping the moustache, letting the beard grow, using the tooth-stick, snuffing up water, cutting the nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the hair under the armpits, shaving the pubes, and intiqas, i.e. cleansing oneself with water.” The narrator said, “I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have been rinsing the mouth.”
Muslim transmitted it. A version substitutes circumcision for letting the beard grow. I have not found this version in the two
Sahihs or in al-Humaidi’s book [Al-jam’ bain as-sahihain], but the author of the Jami‘ [Ibn al-Athir, author of Jami' al-usul]
mentioned it. as did al-Khattabi in Ma'alim as-sunan* from Abu Dawud by the transmission of ‘Ammar b. Yasir.
*Brockelmann, Geschichte ae arabischen Litteratur, Supp., I, 267, 275, calls this work Ma'alim as-sunna, but the title given above is more likely to be correct, as it is a commentary on Abu Dawud’s Sunan.

(amongst the group)."
Heraclius said, "Bring him (Abu Sufyan) close to me and make his
companions stand behind him." Abu Sufyan added, Heraclius told his
translator to tell my companions that he wanted to put some questions
to me regarding that man (The Prophet) and that if I told a lie they
(my companions) should contradict me." Abu Sufyan added, "By Allah!
Had I not been afraid of my companions labeling me a liar, I would not
have spoken the truth about the Prophet. The first question he asked
me about him was:
'What is his family status amongst you?'
I replied, 'He belongs to a good (noble) family amongst us.'
Heraclius further asked, 'Has anybody amongst you ever claimed the
same (i.e. to be a Prophet) before him?'
I replied, 'No.'
He said, 'Was anybody amongst his ancestors a king?'
I replied, 'No.'
Heraclius asked, 'Do the nobles or the poor follow him?'
I replied, 'It is the poor who follow him.'
He said, 'Are his followers increasing decreasing (day by day)?'
I replied, 'They are increasing.'
He then asked, 'Does anybody amongst those who embrace his religion
become displeased and renounce the religion afterwards?'
I replied, 'No.'
Heraclius said, 'Have you ever accused him of telling lies before his
claim (to be a Prophet)?'
I replied, 'No. '
Heraclius said, 'Does he break his promises?'
I replied, 'No. We are at truce with him but we do not know what he
will do in it.' I could not find opportunity to say anything against
him except that.
Heraclius asked, 'Have you ever had a war with him?'
I replied, 'Yes.'
Then he said, 'What was the outcome of the battles?'
I replied, 'Sometimes he was victorious and sometimes we.'
Heraclius said, 'What does he order you to do?'
I said, 'He tells us to worship Allah and Allah alone and not to
worship anything along with Him, and to renounce all that our
ancestors had said. He orders us to pray, to speak the truth, to be
chaste and to keep good relations with our Kith and kin.'
Heraclius asked the translator to convey to me the following, I asked
you about his family and your reply was that he belonged to a very
noble family. In fact all the Apostles come from noble families
amongst their respective peoples. I questioned you whether anybody
else amongst you claimed such a thing, your reply was in the negative.
If the answer had been in the affirmative, I would have thought that
this man was following the previous man's statement. Then I asked you
whether anyone of his ancestors was a king. Your reply was in the
negative, and if it had been in the affirmative, I would have thought
that this man wanted to take back his ancestral kingdom.
I further asked whether he was ever accused of telling lies before he
said what he said, and your reply was in the negative. So I wondered
how a person who does not tell a lie about others could ever tell a
lie about Allah. I, then asked you whether the rich people followed
him or the poor. You replied that it was the poor who followed him.
And in fact all the Apostle have been followed by this very class of
people. Then I asked you whether his followers were increasing or
decreasing. You replied that they were increasing, and in fact this is
the way of true faith, till it is complete in all respects. I further
asked you whether there was anybody, who, after embracing his
religion, became displeased and discarded his religion. Your reply was
in the negative, and in fact this is (the sign of) true faith, when
its delight enters the hearts and mixes with them completely. I asked
you whether he had ever betrayed. You replied in the negative and
likewise the Apostles never betray. Then I asked you what he ordered
you to do. You replied that he ordered you to worship Allah and Allah
alone and not to worship any thing along with Him and forbade you to
worship idols and ordered you to pray, to speak the truth and to be
chaste. If what you have said is true, he will very soon occupy this
place underneath my feet and I knew it (from the scriptures) that he
was going to appear but I did not know that he would be from you, and
if I could reach him definitely, I would go immediately to meet him
and if I were with him, I would certainly wash his feet.' Heraclius
then asked for the letter addressed by Allah's Apostle
which was delivered by Dihya to the Governor of Busra, who forwarded
it to Heraclius to read. The contents of the letter were as follows:
"In the name of Allah the Beneficent, the Merciful (This letter is)
from Muhammad the slave of Allah and His Apostle to Heraclius the
ruler of Byzantine. Peace be upon him, who follows the right path.
Furthermore I invite you to Islam, and if you become a Muslim you will
be safe, and Allah will double your reward, and if you reject this
invitation of Islam you will be committing a sin of
Arisiyin (tillers, farmers i.e. your people). And (Allah's Statement:)
'O people of the scripture! Come to a word common to you and us that
we worship none but Allah and that we associate nothing in worship
with Him, and that none of us shall take others as Lords beside Allah.
Then, if they turn away, say: Bear witness that we are Muslims (those
who have surrendered to Allah).' (3:64).
Abu Sufyan then added, "When Heraclius had finished his speech and had
read the letter, there was a great hue and cry in the Royal Court. So
we were turned out of the court. I told my companions that the
question of Ibn-Abi-Kabsha) (the Prophet Muhammad) has become so
prominent that even the King of Bani Al-Asfar (Byzantine) is afraid of
him. Then I started to become sure that he (the Prophet) would be the
conqueror in the near future till I embraced Islam (i.e. Allah guided
me to it)."
The sub narrator adds, "Ibn An-Natur was the Governor of llya'
(Jerusalem) and Heraclius was the head of the Christians of Sham. Ibn
An-Natur narrates that once while Heraclius was visiting ilya'
(Jerusalem), he got up in the morning with a sad mood. Some of his
priests asked him why he was in that mood? Heraclius was a foreteller
and an astrologer. He replied, 'At night when I looked at the stars, I
saw that the leader of those who practice circumcision had appeared
(become the conqueror). Who are they who practice circumcision?' The
people replied, 'Except the Jews nobody practices circumcision, so you
should not be afraid of them (Jews).
'Just Issue orders to kill every Jew present in the country.'
While they were discussing it, a messenger sent by the king of Ghassan
to convey the news of Allah's Apostle to Heraclius was brought in.
Having heard the news, he (Heraclius) ordered the people to go and see
whether the messenger of Ghassan was circumcised. The people, after
seeing him, told Heraclius that he was circumcised. Heraclius then
asked him about the Arabs. The messenger replied, 'Arabs also practice
circumcision.'
(After hearing that) Heraclius remarked that sovereignty of the 'Arabs
had appeared. Heraclius then wrote a letter to his friend in Rome who
was as good as Heraclius in knowledge. Heraclius then left for Homs.
(a town in Syrian and stayed there till he received the reply of his
letter from his friend who agreed with him in his opinion about the
emergence of the Prophet and the fact that he was a Prophet. On that
Heraclius invited all the heads of the Byzantines to assemble in his
palace at Homs. When they assembled, he ordered that all the doors of
his palace be closed. Then he came out and said, 'O Byzantines! If
success is your desire and if you seek right guidance and want your
empire to remain then give a pledge of allegiance to this Prophet
(i.e. embrace Islam).'
(On hearing the views of Heraclius) the people ran towards the gates
of the palace like onagers but found the doors closed. Heraclius
realized their hatred towards Islam and when he lost the hope of their
embracing Islam, he ordered that they should be brought back in
audience.
(When they returned) he said, 'What already said was just to test the
strength of your conviction and I have seen it.' The people prostrated
before him and became pleased with him, and this was the end of
Heraclius's story (in connection with his faith).

Malik related to me that the generally agreed on way of doing
things amongst the community about an accident is that there is no
blood-money until the victim is better. If a man's bone, either a
hand, or a foot, or another part of his body, is broken accidentally
and it heals and becomes sound and returns to its form, there is no
blood-money for it. If the limb is impaired or there is a scar on it,
there is blood-money for it according to the extent that it is
impaired.
Malik said, "If that part of the body has a
specific blood-money mentioned by the Prophet, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, it is according to what the Prophet, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, specified. If it is part of what does not
have a specific blood-money for it mentioned by the Prophet, may Allah
bless him and grant him peace, and if there is no previous sunna about
it or specific blood-money, one uses ijtihad about it."
Malik
said, "There is no blood-money for an accidental bodily injury when
the wound heals and returns to its form. If there is any scar or mark
in that, ijtihad is used about it except for the belly-wound. There is
a third of the blood-money of a life for it. "
Malik said,
"There is no blood-money for the wound which splinters a bone in the
body, and it is like the wound to the body which lays bare the bone."
Malik said, "The generally agreed on way of doing things in
our community is that when the doctor performs a circumcision and cuts
off the glans, he must pay the full blood-money. That is because it is
an accident which the tribe is responsible for, and the full blood
money is payable for all that in which a doctor errs or exceeds, when
it is not intentional."

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that he heard
Said ibn al-Musayyab asking a group of people, "What do you think
about someone who has intercourse with his wife while he is in ihram?"
and none of them answered him. Said said, "There is a man who has had
intercourse with his wife while in ihram who has sent a message to
Madina asking about it." Some of them said, "They should be kept apart
until a future year," and Said ibn al-Musayyab said, "They should
carry on and complete the hajj which they have spoiled, and then
return home when they have finished. If another hajj comes upon them,
they must do hajj and sacrifice an animal. They should go into ihram
at the same place where they went into ihram for the hajj that they
spoiled, and they should keep apart until they have finished their
hajj."
Malik said, "They should both sacrifice an animal."
Malik said, about a man who had intercourse with his wife
during hajj after he had come down from Arafa but before he had stoned
the Jamra, "He must sacrifice an animal and do hajj again in another
year. If, however, he had intercourse with his wife after he stoned
the Jamra, he only has to do an umra and sacrifice an animal and he
does not have to do another hajj."
Malik said, "What spoils a
hajj or an umra and makes sacrificing an animal and repeating the hajj
necessary is the meeting of the two circumcised parts, even if there
is no emission. It is also made necessary by an emission if it is the
result of bodily contact. I do not think that a man who remembers
something and has an emission owes anything, and if a man were to kiss
his wife and no emission were to occur from that, he would only have
to sacrifice an animal. A woman in ihram who has intercourse with her
husband several times during hajj or umra out of obedience to him only
has to do another hajj and sacrifice an animal. That is if her husband
has intercourse with her while she is doing hajj. If he has
intercourse with her while she is doing umra, she must repeat the umra
she has spoiled and sacrifice an animal."

Sahih al-Bukhari 4072
Narrated Jafar bin `Amr bin Umaiya:
I went out with 'Ubaidullah bin `Adi Al-Khaiyar. When we reached Hims (i.e. a town in Syria),
'Ubaidullah bin `Adi said (to me), "Would you like to see Wahshi so that we may ask him about the
killing of Hamza?" I replied, "Yes." Wahshi used to live in Hims. We enquired about him and
somebody said to us, "He is that in the shade of his palace, as if he were a full water skin." So we went
up to him, and when we were at a short distance from him, we greeted him and he greeted us in return.
'Ubaidullah was wearing his turban and Wahshi could not see except his eyes and feet. 'Ubaidullah
said, "O Wahshi! Do you know me?" Wahshi looked at him and then said, "No, by Allah! But I know
that `Adi bin Al-Khiyar married a woman called Um Qital, the daughter of Abu Al-Is, and she
delivered a boy for him at Mecca, and I looked for a wet nurse for that child. (Once) I carried that
child along with his mother and then I handed him over to her, and your feet resemble that child's
feet." Then 'Ubaidullah uncovered his face and said (to Wahshi), "Will you tell us (the story of) the
killing of Hamza?" Wahshi replied "Yes, Hamza killed Tuaima bin `Adi bin Al-Khaiyar at Badr
(battle) so my master, Jubair bin Mut`im said to me, 'If you kill Hamza in revenge for my uncle, then
you will be set free."
When the people set out (for the battle of Uhud) in the year of 'Ainain ..'Ainain is a mountain near the
mountain of Uhud, and between it and Uhud there is a valley.. I went out with the people for the
battle. When the army aligned for the fight, Siba' came out and said, 'Is there any (Muslim) to accept
my challenge to a duel?' Hamza bin `Abdul Muttalib came out and said, 'O Siba'. O Ibn Um Anmar,
the one who circumcises other ladies! Do you challenge Allah and His Apostle?' Then Hamza
attacked and killed him, causing him to be non-extant like the bygone yesterday. I hid myself under a
rock, and when he (i.e. Hamza) came near me, I threw my spear at him, driving it into his umbilicus
so that it came out through his buttocks, causing him to die. When all the people returned to Mecca, I
too returned with them. I stayed in (Mecca) till Islam spread in it (i.e. Mecca). Then I left for Taif, and
when the people (of Taif) sent their messengers to Allah's Apostle, I was told that the Prophet did not
harm the messengers; So I too went out with them till I reached Allah's Apostle.
When he saw me, he said, 'Are you Wahshi?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Was it you who killed Hamza?' I
replied, 'What happened is what you have been told of.' He said, 'Can you hide your face from me?' So
I went out when Allah's Apostle died, and Musailamah Al-Kadhdhab appeared (claiming to be a
prophet). I said, 'I will go out to Musailamah so that I may kill him, and make amends for killing
Hamza. So I went out with the people (to fight Musailamah and his followers) and then famous events
took place concerning that battle. Suddenly I saw a man (i.e. Musailamah) standing near a gap in a
wall. He looked like an ash-colored camel and his hair was dishevelled. So I threw my spear at him,
driving it into his chest in between his breasts till it passed out through his shoulders, and then an
Ansari man attacked him and struck him on the head with a sword. `Abdullah bin `Umar said, 'A slave
girl on the roof of a house said: Alas! The chief of the believers (i.e. Musailamah) has been killed by a
black slave."
