The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: Do not eat meat with a knife, for it is a foreign practice, but bite it, for it is more beneficial and wholesome.

Abu Dawud said: This tradition is not strong.

The food the Messenger of Allah (saws) liked best was tharid made from bread and tharid made from Hays.

Abu Dawud said: It is a weak (tradition).

The Prophet (saws) said: To harbour good thoughts is a part of well-conducted worship. (This is according to Nasr's version).

Abu Dawud said: Mahna' is reliable and he is from Basrah.

Jabir reported God’s Messenger as saying, "Cutting off the hand is not to be inflicted on one who plunders, but he who does so conspicuously does not belong to us.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Abu Huraira told that two men disputed about an animal but could produce no proof, so the Prophet said, “Cast lots about the oath.” Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

Ibn Mas'ud said that the extent of the shadow when God’s Messenger prayed the noon prayer was three to five feet in summer and five to seven feet in winter. Abu Dawud and Nasa’i transmitted it.

Abu Mahdhura said that the Prophet taught him the adhan as consisting of nineteen words, and the iqama as consisting of seventeen words. Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Darimi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

Abu Bakra said, “I went out with the Prophet to the Morning Prayer, and he called every man he passed to prayer, or shook him with his foot.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Ibn ‘Abbas said that God’s Messenger cursed women who visited graves, people who put mosques there and those who lit lamps there. Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi and Nasa’i transmitted it.

‘Amr b. Shu'aib, on his father's authority, said that his grandfather declared he had seen God’s Messenger praying both barefoot and wearing sandals. Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Anas told how God’s Messenger used to say to those on his right, ‘‘Keep straight and straighten your rows," and say the same to those on his left. Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari reported God’s Messenger as saying, “The gates of heaven are opened for four rak'as containing no taslim before the noon prayer.” Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

‘Ali reported God’s Messenger as saying, “God is single (witr) and loves what is single, so observe the witr, you who follow the Qur’an.” Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and Nasa’i transmitted it.

Samura b. Jundub said that God’s Messenger led them in prayer during an eclipse, but that they did not hear what he said. Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Nasa’i and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

Jabir said ; When I came to the Prophet he was sitting with his hands round his knees wearing a cloak the fringe of which was over his feet. Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Ibn ‘Abbas reported the Prophet as saying, “At the end of time there will be people who will use this black dye like the crops of doves who will not experience the fragrance of paradise.” Abu Dawud and Nasa’i transmitted it.

Abu Ziyad told that when he asked ‘A’isha about onions she replied that the last food God’s messenger ate was some which contained onions. Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Abu Malik al-Ash'ari told of hearing God’s messenger say, “Some of my people will assuredly drink wine calling it by another name.” Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

‘Imran b Husain reported God’s Messenger as saying, “A section, of my people will continue to fight for the right and overcome their opponents till the last of them fight with the antichrist." Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Samura b. Jundub told that God’s Messenger used to say, “Anyone who conceals one who has been dishonest about booty is like him. Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Anas reported the Prophet as saying, "My intercession will be for those of my people who have committed major sins." Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud transmitted it, and Ibn Majah transmitted it on Jabir's authority.

Allah's Messenger (SAW) forbade that a stupid woman may be asked to suckle an infant. [Abu Dawud reported it. It is Mursal (missing link after the Tabi'i) and Ziyad is not a Sahabi].

"The Prophet (SAW) assigned him land in Hadramout." [Reported by Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi. Ibn Hibban graded it Sahih (authentic)].

The Prophet (SAW) said, "When a new born cries (at the time of birth) (and then dies), it is treated as a hair." [Reported by Abu Dawud and graded as Sahih (authentic) by Ibn Hibban].

Surat al-Hajj has been distinguished by two prostrations. [Abu Dawud reported it among al-Marasil (a broken chain after the Tabi'i)].

The Prophet (SAW) used to recite some verses from the Qur'an in the Friday Khutbah (religious talk - sermon), reminding the people. [Abu Dawud reported it].

It rained on an 'Eid day, so the Prophet (SAW) led them (the people) in the 'Eid prayer in the mosque. [Reported by Abu Dawud with a Laiyin Isnad (weak chain)].

‘A'isha said, “God’s messenger used his right hand for his ablution water and his food, and his left hand for his evacuations and anything objectionable.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

‘A'isha said God’s messenger commanded that the skins of animals which had died a natural death should be made use of after they had been tanned. Malik and Abu Dawud transmitted it.

‘A'isha said, “When I menstruated I left the bed and lay on the reed-mat and did not approach or come near God’s messenger till I was purified.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Al-‘Irbad b. Sariya told that God’s messenger invited him to a meal shortly before dawn in Ramadan saying, “Come to the blessed morning meal.” Abu Dawud and Nasa’i transmitted it.

‘Amir b. Rabi'a said he had seen the Prophet more often than he could count using a toothstick while he was fasting. Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud transmitted it.

‘A'isha said that when God’s messenger intended to engage in private devotion in the mosque he prayed the dawn prayer and then entered his place of seclusion. Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

He reported the Prophet as saying, “Both life-tenancy and giving property which goes to the survivor are a gift which belongs to those who receive it." Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Jabir reported God’s Messenger as saying, "If anyone gives as a dower to his wife two handfuls of flour or dates he has made her lawful for him.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Abu Huraira reported God’s Messenger as saying, “He who makes a wife disaffected towards her husband or a slave towards his master is not one of us.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

‘A’isha reported God’s Messenger as saying, “The divorce of a slave-woman consists in saying it twice, and her 'idda period is two courses.” Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and Darimi transmitted it.

Rafi‘ b. Khadij reported the Prophet as saying, “The hand is not to be cut off for taking fruit or the pith of the palm-tree.” Malik, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Nasa'i, Darimi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) cursed a man who puts on the dress of women, and a woman who puts on the dress of men.

[Abu Dawud].

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) directed us to observe Saum (fasting) on the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of the (lunar) month.

[Abu Dawud].

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Allah and His angels invoke blessings upon those who are on the right side of the rows."

[Abu Dawud].

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Keep to travelling by night because the earth is folded (traversed more easily) during the night."

[Abu Dawud].

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Do not revile the rooster for it wakes you up for prayer."

[Abu Dawud].

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) heard the recitation of Abu Musa and said: He has been given a Mizmar among the Mazamir of the family of Dawud, peace be upon him."

"The Messenger of Allah (SAW) heard the recitation of Abu Musa and said: 'This man has been given a Mizmar among the Mazamir of the family of Dawud, peace be upon him.'"

"The Messenger of Allah (SAW) heard the recitation of Abu Musa and said: 'This man has been given a Mizmar among the Mazamir of the family of Dawud, peace be upon him.'"

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Ruqba belongs to the one to whom it is given.'"

The Prophet (saws) sent Mu`adh for some of his work. He then transmitted the rest of the tradition mentioned above.

Abu Dawud said: This tradition is sounder of the two traditions.

When we were with Ibn ‘Umar, he heard the sound of a man who was blowing a pipe. He then mentioned a similar tradition.

Abu Dawud said : This is more rejected.

Abu Salih narrated this tradition with a different chain of transmitters to the same effect as reported by Sulaiman b. Dawud. But this version has the word KHARAJA (he went out) instead of BARAZA (proceeded).

This (practice of ‘Ata’) weakens the tradition (narrated by Abu Hurairah).

The last practice of the Messenger of Allah (saws) was that he did not perform ablution after taking anything that was cooked with the help of fire.

Abu Dawud said: This is the abridgment of the former tradition.

The tradition mentioned above has been transmitted by Dawud with a different chain of narrators. He said “The Apostle of Allaah(saws) apportioned it (spoils of war) equally. The tradition of Khalid is more perfect.

She should wash at the time of the Zuhr prayer (the bath will be valid one Zuhr prayer to the next Zuhr prayer); and should perform ablution for every prayer. If there is excessive bleed gin, she should tie a cloth over her private part.

Abu Dawud said: It has been narrated by Ibn 'Umar and Anas b. Malik that she should take bath at the time of the Zuhr prayer (being valid) until the next Zuhr prayer. This tradition has also been transmuted by Dawud and 'Asim from al-Sha'bi from his wife from Qumair on the authority of 'Aishah, except that the version of Dawud has the words: "every day," and the version of 'Asim has the words: "at the time of Zuhr prayer". This is the view of Salim b. 'Abd Allah, al-Hassan, and 'Ata.

Abu Dawud said: Malik said: I think that the tradition narrated by Ibn a;-Musayyab must contain the words: "from one purification to another". But it was misunderstood and the people changed it to: "for one Zuhr prayer to another".

It has also been reported by Miswar b. 'Abd al-Malik b. Sa'id b. 'Abd al-Rahman b. Yarbu', saying: "from one purification to another," but the people changed it to: "from one zuhr to another."

The words narrated by Malik alone are: "and he attributed the child to the woman."

Yunus narrated from Al Zuhri on the authority of Sahl bin Sa’d in the tradition regarding li’an(invoking curses). He disowned her conception hence her child was attributed to her.

I was present at Khaybar along with my masters who spoke about me to the Messenger of Allah (saws). He ordered about me, and a sword was girded on me and I was trailing it. He was then informed that I was a slave. He, therefore, ordered that I should be given some inferior goods.

Abu Dawud said: This means that he (the Prophet) did not allot a portion of the spoils.

Abu Dawud said: Abu 'Ubaid said: As he (the narrator Abi al-Lahm) made eating meat unlawful on himself, he was called Abi al-Lahm (one who hates meat).

The Prophet (saws) said: If you find anyone doing as Lot's people did, kill the one who does it, and the one to whom it is done.

Abu Dawud said: A similar tradition has also been transmitted by Sulaiman b. Bilal from 'Amr b. Abi 'Umar. And 'Abbad b. Mansur transmitted it from 'Ikrimah on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas who transmitted it from the Prophet (saws). It has also been transmitted by Ibn Juraij from Ibrahim from Dawud b. Al-Husain from 'Ikrimah on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas who transmitted it from the Prophet (saws).

The Prophet (saws) said: If anyone omits the Friday prayer without excuse, he must give one dirham or half a dirham, or one sa' or half a sa' of wheat, in alms.

Abu Dawud said: Sa'id b. Bashir reported this tradition in a like manner, except that he narrated "one mudd or half mudd" (instead of sa'). He narrated it from Samurah.

Abu Dawud said: I heard Ahmad bin Hanbal being asked about the differences over the narration of this Hadith. He said: "Hammam has a stronger memory - in my opinion - than Ayyub."

The Messenger of Allah (saws) as saying: No one withholds goods till their price rises but a sinner. I said to Sa'id (b. al-Musayyab): You withhold goods till their price rises. He said: Ma'mar used to withhold goods till their price rose.

Abu Dawud said: I asked Ahmad (b. Hanbal): What is hoarding (hukrah) ? He replied: That on which people live.

Abu Dawud said: Al-Auza'i said: A muhtakir (one who hoards) is one who withholds supply of goods in the market.

When Khalid al-Qasri was made ruler (of Hijaz and Kufah), he doubled the measure of sa'. The sa' then measured sixteen rotls.

Abu Dawud said: Muhammad b. Muhammad b. Khattab was slain by Negroes in confinement. He said while signing with his hand: "in this way". Abu Dawud extended his hand and turned his palms towards earth and said: I saw him in the dream and asked him: How did Allah deal with you ? He replied: He admitted to Paradise. I said: Your detention did not harm you.

The Prophet (said) said: A bier should not be followed by a loud voice (of wailing) or fire.

Abu Dawud said: Harun (one of the narrators) added: "And it should not be preceded (with those) either."

The Messenger of Allah (saws) forbade to ride on panther skins and to wear gold except a little.

Abu Dawud said: The narrator Abu Qilabah did not meet Mu'awiyah.

Ibn ‘Umar reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him)As saying: The Muslims will soon be besieged up to Madina so that their most distant frontier outpost will be Salah.

Abu Sa'id reported God’s Messenger as saying, “Nothing interrupts prayer, but repulse, as much as you can anyone who passes in front of you, for he is just a devil.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Abu Huraira reported God’s Messenger as saying, “Kill the two black things during prayer, the snake and the scorpion.” Ahmad, Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi transmitted it, and Nasa’i has something to the same effect.

Ibn ‘Umar said that the Prophet made a prostration in the noon prayer, then stood up and bowed; and they thought he recite Tanzil, i.e. sura as-Sajda (Al-Qur’an; 32). Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Ibn al-Firasi said that al-Firasi asked God's messenger whether he might beg, and the Prophet replied, “No; but if there is no escape from it, beg from the upright.” Abu Dawud and Nasa’i transmitted it.

Umm Bujaid reported God’s messenger as saying, “Send away the beggar [with something], even with only a burnt hoof.” Malik and Nasa’i transmitted it, and Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud transmitted something to the same effect.

Abu Umama lyas b. Tha'laba reported God’s messenger as saying, “Listen, listen! Wearing old clothes is a part of faith, wearing old clothes is a part of faith.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

‘Abdallah b. ‘Amr told that when a man wearing two red garments passed the Prophet and gave him a greeting he did not respond to his greeting. Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Ibn Abu Mulaika told that when someone remarked to ‘A’isha that a woman was wearing sandals (in refrence to men’s footwear) she replied that God’s messenger cursed mannish women. Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Abu Huraira told that God’s messenger saw a man following a pigeon and said, "A devil is following a she-devil." Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and Baihaqi, in Shu’ab al-iman, transmitted it.

Al-'Abbas said, "Messenger of God, we wish to sweep out Zamzam, but in it there are some of these jinnan," meaning small snakes; so God’s messenger ordered that they should be killed. Abu Dawud transmitted it.

“No spell is to be used except for the evil eye or a scorpion sting.” Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud transmitted it, and Ibn Majah transmitted it on the authority of Buraida.

Umm Haram reported the Prophet as saying, “He who becomes sick on a stormy sea will have the reward of a martyr, and he who is drowned will have the reward of two martyrs.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Nafi' told that Ibn `Umar used to say, "I swear by God that I do not doubt the antichrist is Ibn Sayyad." Abu Dawud and Baihaqi, in Kitab al-ba'th wan nushur, transmitted it.

‘AIi (RAA) narrated, ‘l heard the Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H.) say, “Do not be extravagant in shrouding (i.e. do not spend too much money on them) for it will decay quickly.” Related by Abu Dawud.

A’ishah (RAA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H.) said, “Breaking a deceased body’s bones is exactly like breaking them when he is alive.” Related by Abu Dawud in accordance with the conditions of Muslim.

A’ishah (RAA) narrated’ ‘The Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H.)specified for those coming from Iraq, Dhat ‘Irq (a place 94 km to the north-east of Makkah) as their Miqat.’ Related by Abu Dawud and An-Nasa’i`.

Ibn Abbas (RAA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H.) said, "Women (pilgrims) do not have to shave (their heads); they may only shorten their hair." Related by Abu Dawud with a good chain of narrators.

Ibn ’Umar (RAA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H.) said, “He who imitates any people (in their actions) is considered to be one of them.” Related by Abu Dawud and Ibn Hibban graded it as Sahih.

Sa'id bin Jubair (RAA) narrated, ‘The Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H.) killed three men on the day of Badr while they were in bonds (by throwing arrows at them until they died).’ Related by Abu Dawud.

Allah's messenger (saws) said, "It is not permitted for a menstruating woman or one who is junub (sexually impure) to stay in the mosque." Related by Abu Dawud and Ibn Khuzaimah graded it as Sahih

Allah's Messenger (SAW) ruled on the basis of an oath and a single witness. [Muslim, Abu Dawud and an-Nasa'i reported it, the latter said that it has a Jayyid (good) chain or narrators].

Abu Dawud reported a Hadith narrated by Abu Humaid (RA) to the effect that he [Allah's Messenger (SAW)] used to raise his hands and bring them parallel to his shoulders, and then utter the Takbir.

Rabbi’ghfir lī, Rabbi’ghfir lī. Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me. Reference: Abu Dawud 1/231. See also Al-Albani, Sahihibn Mdjah 1/148.

Between the call to prayer and the 'Iqamah, you should supplicate Allah for yourself. Invocation during this time is not rejected. Reference: At-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ahmed. See Irwaa Al-Ghalil 1/262

Ibn ‘Abbas reported God’s messenger as saying, “Ablution is necessary for one who sleeps lying down, for when he lies down his joints are relaxed.” Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Ibn ‘Abbas said that God's messenger ate a shoulder, and after wiping his hand with a cloth on which he was sitting, he got up and prayed. Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

relieving oneself in watering-places, in the middle of the road, and in the shade.” Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

‘Abdallah b. Zaid said that he saw God’s messenger rinse his mouth and snuff up water from one hand, doing that three times. Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi transmitted it.

‘A'isha reported God’s messenger as saying, “Turn these houses so as not to face the mosque, for I do not make the mosque lawful for a menstruating woman or one who is seminally defiled.” Abu Dawud transmitted it.

She said that the Prophet used to visit the sick while engaged in a period of private devotion in the mosque and he would pass on straight ahead without pausing and ask for him. Abu Dawud transmitted it.

Al-Hasan said that Samura reported the Prophet as saying, “If anyone puts a wall round land*, it belongs to him.” Abu Dawud transmitted it. * Mirqat, iii, 369 says the reference is to barren land.

Bahz b. Hakim, on his father’s authority, said his grandfather told that the Prophet imprisoned a man on suspicion. Abu Dawud transmitted it, and Tirmidhi and Nasa’i added that afterwards let him go.

cowardliness, niggardliness, the evils of old age, evil thoughts, and the punishment in the grave. Abu Dawud and Nasa'i transmitted it.

I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying: "When you pray over the dead, make a sincere supplication for him."

[Abu Dawud].

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Fill (complete) the first row, then the one next to it; and if there is any deficiency (incompleteness), it should be in the last row."

[Abu Dawud].

The Prophet (PBUH) said, "He who does not recite the Qur'an in a pleasant tone is not of us."

[Abu Dawud].

I heard the Prophet (saws) read on the pulpit the verse: "They will cry: O Malik."

Abu Dawud said: That is, without shortening the name (Malik).
