Three-Narrator Ahadith 93
Ibn Abī ʻAdī narrated to us from Ḥumayd, from Anas, who said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madīnah, and its people had two days on which they used to play in the [time of] ignorance (Jāhiliyyah). He said, ‘Allah has given you, in place of the two, two days better than them:
the day of Fiṭr and the day of Naḥr.’”

Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of Muslim. The report establishes ʿĪd al-Fiṭr and ʿĪd al-Aḍḥā as the two recurring religious festivals of the Muslim community, replacing the specifically religious festival days inherited from pre-Islamic Madīnah. “Better” refers to their divinely sanctioned character and their connection to worship: the completion of Ramadan and the rites of sacrifice and pilgrimage. From a fiqh perspective, it does not prohibit ordinary recreation, nonreligious cultural celebrations, family gatherings, [some] national observances, or occasions of happiness that contain no religious imitation, prohibited conduct, or claim to religious sanctity. Consult the national fiqh council or school of thought for specific questions about celebrations in one’s region.
