Three-Narrator Ahadith 92
Muḥammad ibn Abī ʻAdī narrated to us from Ḥumayd, from Anas, that the Prophet ﷺ was praying one night in his chamber, and some people came and prayed following his prayer. He shortened it, then entered the house, then came out; he did this several times, praying each time. In the morning they said, “Messenger of Allah, you prayed, and we would have liked you to prolong your prayer.” He said, “I knew you were there, and I did that deliberately.”

Musnad Aḥmad 92
| Grade: | Ṣaḥīḥ |
Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Its meaning is further corroborated by the reports of ʿĀʾishah, Zayd ibn Thābit, and others that the Prophet ﷺ prayed voluntary night prayer in his chamber, people joined him, and he then ceased praying publicly lest the prayer be made obligatory upon the community (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, nos. 1129, 2012, 7290; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, no. 761). His deliberate shortening in the present report likewise prevented the congregation from assuming that his extended personal night prayer was to become a regular congregational obligation. The report affirms that voluntary prayer may be followed by others when it occurs incidentally, while preserving the Prophet’s ﷺ concern not to burden the community by establishing a practice that might be misunderstood as mandatory.
