مُسْنَدُ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا
Three-Narrator Ahadith 9
Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) reported:
“The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) entered the mosque of Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf, that is Masjid Qubāʾ, to pray. Men of the Anṣār entered to greet him, and Ṣuhayb was with him. I asked Ṣuhayb: ‘How did the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) respond when he was greeted [while in prayer]?’ He said: ‘He would gesture with his hand.’“ Sufyān said: “I asked a man to ask Zayd [ibn Aslam]: ‘Did you hear this from ʿAbdullāh [ibn ʿUmar]?’ for I was too shy to ask him myself. The man asked: ‘O Abū Usāma, did you hear it from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar?’ Zayd replied: ‘As for me, I saw him and I even spoke to him.’“

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ: دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَسْجِدَ بَنِي عَمْرِو بْنِ عَوْفٍ مَسْجِدَ قُبَاءَ يُصَلِّي فِيهِ، فَدَخَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ رِجَالٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَيْهِ، وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ صُهَيْبٌ، فَسَأَلْتُ صُهَيْبًا: كَيْفَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصْنَعُ إِذَا سُلِّمَ عَلَيْهِ؟ قَالَ: «يُشِيرُ بِيَدِهِ.» قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: قُلْتُ لِرَجُلٍ سَلِ زَيْدًا أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، وَهِبْتُ أَنَا أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَبَا أُسَامَةَ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ؟ قَالَ: أَمَّا أَنَا فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ فَكَلَّمْتُهُ.

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 4568).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← Zayd ibn Aslam ← ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (same chain as Ḥadīth 8). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ. Zayd ibn Aslam: thiqah. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar: Companion. Sufyān’s appended inquiry confirms that Zayd received this directly from Ibn ʿUmar; “Abū Usāma” was the kunyā of Zayd ibn Aslam. Takhrīj: Abū Dāwūd, no. 927; al-Tirmidhī, no. 368 (ḥasan); Ibn Mājah, no. 1017. It was the Prophet’s practice when greeted during prayer to gesture with his right hand, sometimes with the palm facing down, sometimes with the index finger. Multiple companions reported this in slightly different terms, indicating the various ways he would acknowledge greetings without words. Scholars derive from this that one may greet Muslims who are praying, and that responding with a gesture does not invalidate the prayer.
