Three-Narrator Ahadith 82
Ismāʻīl narrated to us:
ʻAbd al-ʻAzīz narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said, “The iqāmah for the prayer was called while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was speaking quietly with a man in the mosque, and he did not rise to pray until the people had dozed off.”

Musnad Aḥmad 3/101, no. 11987. Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
The iqāmah is the shorter call made immediately before each of the five obligatory prayers to announce that the prayer is about to begin. Al-Bukhārī’s narration mentions that only some of the people dozed off. It is recorded by al-Bukhārī (Ṣaḥīḥ, nos. 642-643) and Muslim (Ṣaḥīḥ, no. 376). In the fuller wording, the Prophet ﷺ was conversing privately with a man at the side of the mosque after the iqāmah had been pronounced. The report indicates that the imam may delay commencing the prayer briefly for a genuine need, though he should not make the congregation wait without reason. The Companions’ “dozing” is understood as light sleep while seated, not necessarily the sleep that invalidates ablution.
