مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 58
Hushaym narrated to us from Ḥumayd:
Anas ibn Mālik narrated to us, saying, “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took Ṣafiyyah [as his wife], he stayed with her three nights, for she had been previously married.”

حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: «لَمَّا اتَّخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَفِيَّةَ أَقَامَ عِنْدَهَا ثَلَاثًا، وَكَانَتْ ثَيِّبًا»

Musnad Aḥmad 3/98, no. 11952. Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Al-Bukhārī reports from Anas that it is from the Sunnah that if a man marries a virgin while already having a previously-married wife, he stays seven days with the virgin; and if he marries a previously-married woman while already having a virgin wife, he stays three days with her.
