مُسْنَدُ أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتِ رُقَيْقَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا
Three-Narrator Ahadith 332
Umaymah bint Ruqayqah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:
I gave my pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ along with a group of women, and he taught us [to say], “In whatever you are able and capable of.” I said, “Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than we are to ourselves.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, take our pledge [by hand].” He said, “I do not shake hands with women; my word to one woman is [as binding as] my word to a hundred women.”

حَدَّثَنِيَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعَ ابْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، أُمَيْمَةَ بِنْتَ رُقَيْقَةَ، تَقُولُ: بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نِسْوَةٍ، فَلَقَّنَنَا: «فِيمَا اسْتَطَعْتُنَّ وَأَطَقْتُنَّ». قُلْتُ: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَرْحَمُ بِنَا مِنْ أَنْفُسِنَا. قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، بَايِعْنَا. قَالَ: «إِنِّي لَا أُصَافِحُ النِّسَاءَ، إِنَّمَا قَوْلِي لِامْرَأَةٍ، قَوْلِي لِمِائَةِ امْرَأَةٍ

Chain: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah → Ibn al-Munkadir → Umaymah bint Ruqayqah (may Allah be pleased with her) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah al-Hilālī (d. 198 AH); thiqah ḥāfiẓ imām, one of the foremost scholars of Makkah. (2) Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir: Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir al-Taymī (d. 130 AH); thiqah, a notable tābiʿī jurist of Madīnah. (3) Umaymah bint Ruqayqah: her mother Ruqayqah was the sister of Khadījah bint Khuwaylid, the Prophet's ﷺ first wife. Takhrīj: this report is a key textual basis for the position that the Prophet ﷺ never physically shook hands with women when taking their pledge (bayʿah) at the conquest of Makkah and afterward, his verbal acceptance being legally equivalent.
