Musnad Aḥmad 314
| Grade: | Weak |
Chain: ʿAbdullāh ibn Wāqid al-Ḥarrānī → ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār → al-Hirmās ibn Ziyād al-Bāhilī (may Allah be pleased with him) → witnessed directly. Rijāl: (1) ʿAbdullāh ibn Wāqid al-Ḥarrānī: graded ḍaʿīf by Ibn Ḥajr, the point of weakness in this isnād. (2) ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār, (3) al-Hirmās ibn Ziyād: as above. Takhrīj: The underlying practice, praying voluntary prayers atop a riding animal facing the direction of travel rather than the qiblah, is firmly established through numerous authentic hadiths in the Ṣaḥīḥayn from Ibn ʿUmar and others; Abū Dāwūd similarly reports, on the authority of Anas ibn Mālik, that the Prophet ﷺ would have his she-camel face the qiblah, say the takbīr, and then pray in whatever direction the animal turned. This particular chain via ʿAbdullāh ibn Wāqid is weak, but the ruling it conveys, that facing the qiblah is not required for voluntary prayer while traveling, is otherwise firmly established.
