Three-Narrator Ahadith 31
Jābir (رضي الله عنه) reported:
“The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: ‘If the wealth of Bahrain arrives, I will give you this much, this much, and this much,’ gesturing with his hands three times. When the wealth of Bahrain arrived after the death of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ), Abū Bakr announced: ‘Whoever is owed a debt by the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ), or was made a promise, let him come to us.’ So I came and said: ‘The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) promised: “If the wealth of Bahrain arrives, I will give you this much, this much, and this much,” three times.’ [Abū Bakr] said: ‘Take it.’ So I took it (some of those who heard the account said it amounted to five hundred [dirhams]). Then I came back to him and he did not give me. I came again and he did not give me. I came a third time and he still did not give me. I said: ‘Either give me, or admit your miserliness (bukhl) toward me.’ He said: ‘Did you say I am being miserly with you? What ailment is worse than miserliness? I truly wanted to give you every time you came, but I was preoccupied with other affairs.’”

Musnad Aḥmad 31

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 14301).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir ← Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (same chain as Ḥadīth 23). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir: thiqah fāḍil. Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh: Companion. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, nos. 3137, 3165; Muslim, no. 2314. The wealth of Bahrain was a tribute (jizya) sent from that region. The Prophet’s (ﷺ) conditional promise was fulfilled by Abū Bakr (رضي الله عنه) after the Prophet’s death, demonstrating the first Caliph’s meticulous attention to honoring the Prophet’s commitments. Some narrators report the amount as five hundred dirhams; the dinar was the weight of gold equal to 4.3 grams, and the dirham was the weight of silver equal to 3.0 grams. Abū Bakr’s declaration (“What ailment is worse than miserliness?”) is fully in accord with the Prophet’s teaching: “Guard yourselves from bukhl (shukh), for it destroyed those before you” (Abū Dāwūd, no. 1698).
