مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُسْرٍ الْمَازِنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 298
Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān reported:
We were young boys sitting with ʿAbdullāh ibn Busr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and we did not know how to properly ask him questions. I asked, “Was the Prophet ﷺ an old man?” He said, “He had a few white hairs in the tuft of hair below his lower lip (ʿanfaqah).”

حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ حَرِيزِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ، قَالَ: كُنَّا غِلْمَانًا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُسْرٍ، وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَلَمْ نَكُنْ نُحْسِنُ نَسْأَلُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: أَشَيْخًا كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ: «كَانَ فِي عَنْفَقَتِهِ شَعَرَاتٌ بِيضٌ

Chain: Aḥmad → Ḥajjāj ibn Muḥammad al-Aʿwar → Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān → ʿAbdullāh ibn Busr al-Māzinī (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Ḥajjāj ibn Muḥammad al-Aʿwar al-Miṣṣīṣī: thiqah thabt, faqīh, d. 206 AH. (2) Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān al-Raḥabī al-Ḥimṣī: thiqah thabt in narration, though several critics noted he harbored ill feeling toward ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), a matter that pertains to his personal opinion (raʾy) rather than his precision (ḍabṭ) as a narrator; scholars of ḥadīth, following the principle of separating a narrator's creed or bias from his narrational reliability, have accepted his transmissions, and both al-Bukhārī and Muslim relied on him. (3) ʿAbdullāh ibn Busr ibn Abī Busr al-Māzinī: Companion of Syria, one of the last Companions to die, reportedly at nearly a hundred years of age (as noted in a later report below). Takhrīj: Muslim (the ʿanfaqah being the small patch of hair between the lower lip and the chin); al-Tirmidhī, al-Shamāʾil al-Muḥammadiyyah. This report, along with the three that follow, is repeated through several independent chains from Ḥarīz ibn ʿUthmān, all converging on the same brief description.
