I went out from Madīnah heading toward al-Ghābah, and when I reached the mountain pass of al-Ghābah, a young slave of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf met me. I said, “Woe to you, what is wrong?” He said, “The Messenger of Allah’s milk-camels have been seized.” I asked, “Who took them?” He said, “Ghaṭafān and Fazārah.” So I let out three cries that could be heard between the two lava plains [of Madīnah]: “Yā ṣabāḥāh! Yā ṣabāḥāh!” Then I rushed off until I caught up with them, having already seized the camels, and began shooting arrows at them, saying, “I am the son of al-Akwaʿ, and today the base ones will be destroyed.” I recovered the camels from them before they could drink, and drove them back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me on the way, and I said, “Messenger of Allah, the people are thirsty, and I hurried them along before they could drink; shall I go after them?” He said, “Ibn al-Akwaʿ, you have gained mastery over them, so be gentle; the people are now nearing their own kin.” Reference: Musnad Aḥmad 297
