مُسْنَدُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 291
Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray Maghrib the moment the sun set, as soon as its upper edge had disappeared.

حَدَّثَنَا صَفْوَانُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ قَالَ: «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي الْمَغْرِبَ سَاعَةَ تَغْرُبُ الشَّمْسُ إِذَا غَابَ حَاجِبُهَا

Chain: Aḥmad → Ṣafwān ibn ʿĪsā → Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd → Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: as above. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī; Muslim. This hadith establishes the practice of praying Maghrib promptly upon sunset without delay, in contrast to the later practice of some other nations (as noted in other hadiths) who deliberately delayed it; the Prophet's practice here is the basis of the Sunni consensus on the earliest permissible time for Maghrib.
