Three-Narrator Ahadith 286
Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
We set out with the Prophet ﷺ toward Khaybar. A man from the army said, “ʿĀmir, let us hear some of your verses.” So he dismounted and began chanting for them, saying: “By Allah, were it not for Allah, we would not have been guided...” and he recited other verses which I did not memorize. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “Who is this driver?” They said, “ʿĀmir ibn al-Akwaʿ.” He said, “May Allah have mercy on him.” A man said, “Prophet of Allah, if only you had let us enjoy him longer.” When the army formed ranks and fought the enemy, ʿĀmir ibn al-Akwaʿ was struck by the pommel of his own sword and died. That evening, [the Muslims] lit many fires, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “What is this fire, and for what is it being lit?” They said, “For [cooking] domesticated donkeys.” He said, “Pour out what is in [the pots] and break them.” A man said, “Shall we instead pour out what is in them and wash them?” He said, “Or that.”

according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Chain: Aḥmad → Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd → Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd → Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) → witnessed directly. Rijāl: as above. This narration is longer than the preceding report, joining the account of ʿĀmir's poetry and death to the subsequent episode of the domesticated-donkey meat prohibited at Khaybar, both events belonging to the same expedition. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī; Muslim. The prohibition of domesticated donkey flesh, established definitively at Khaybar, is one of the clearest instances of a dietary ruling legislated in the field during a military campaign, distinguishing wild donkey (ḥumur waḥshiyyah, lawful) from domesticated donkey (ḥumur ahliyyah/insiyyah, unlawful).
