مُسْنَدُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 284
Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I was with the Prophet ﷺ when a bier was brought, and they said, “Prophet of Allah, pray over him.” He asked, “Did he leave anything?” They said, “No.” He asked, “Did he leave any debt?” They said, “No.” So he prayed over him. Then another bier was brought afterward, and he asked, “Did he leave any debt?” They said, “No.” He asked, “Did he leave anything?” They said, “Three dinars.” He said, “Three brandings.” Then a third was brought, and he asked, “Did he leave any debt?” They said, “Yes.” He asked, “Did he leave anything?” They said, “No.” He said, “Pray over your companion.” A man from the Anṣār named Abū Qatādah said, “Messenger of Allah, I will bear his debt.” So he prayed over him.

according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Chain: Aḥmad → Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd → Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd → Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān: thiqah thabt ḥāfiẓ, imām, d. 198 AH. (2) Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd: Yazīd ibn Abī ʿUbayd al-Aslamī, mawlā of Salamah; thiqah. (3) Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ: Salamah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Akwaʿ; Companion (Ṣaḥābī); present at Bayʿat al-Riḍwān; d. 74 AH. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī; Muslim; here Abū Qatādah al-Ḥārith ibn Ribʿī al-Anṣārī (a well-known Companion) is named as the volunteer. This hadith is one of the clearest textual proofs for the recommendation of settling a deceased debtor's obligations, a practice later formalized under Islamic law through the bayt al-māl once it was established for this purpose.
