مُسْنَدُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا
Three-Narrator Ahadith 273
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported, through ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rufayʿ:
Shaddād ibn Maʿqil and I went in to see Ibn ʿAbbās, and he said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ left behind nothing except what is between these two covers [the Qurʾān].” We then went in to see Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī [ibn Abī Ṭālib], and he said the same. [ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz added:] Al-Mukhtār [ibn Abī ʿUbayd] used to call this “revelation” [claiming secret knowledge for himself].

Chain: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah → ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rufayʿ → ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with both of them), and Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah). Rijāl: (1) Sufyān: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah ibn Mīmūn al-Hilālī al-Kūfī (d. 198 AH); thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. (2) ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rufayʿ al-Asadī: thiqah. (3) Ibn ʿAbbās: ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās; Companion (Ṣaḥābī); cousin of the Prophet ﷺ and foremost exegete, Ḥabr al-Ummah; d. 68 AH at al-Ṭāʾif. (4) Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, known as Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah: a Tābiʿī of the highest rank, son of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, thiqah. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī (3047) and (5019), with similar wording narrated from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib himself, denying that he possessed any secret prophetic knowledge beyond the Qurʾān and what is contained on a single sheet (ṣaḥīfah) concerning blood-money and captives. Commentary: This report directly refutes the claims of al-Mukhtār ibn Abī ʿUbayd al-Thaqafī, a rebel leader of the late first century AH who falsely claimed to receive revelation and to possess secret knowledge transmitted from the Prophet's ﷺ family, both Ibn ʿAbbās and Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah here firmly deny any such hidden source of knowledge exists beyond the Qurʾān itself, an important early rebuttal of esoteric and extremist claims made in the name of the Ahl al-Bayt.
