Three-Narrator Ahadith 26
Jābir (رضي الله عنه) reported:
“A boy was born to a man among us and he named him al-Qāsim. We said to the man: ‘We shall not call you by the kunyā of Abū al-Qāsim, nor shall we bring joy to your eye [by using it].’ The man went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and told him, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Name your son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.’”

Musnad Aḥmad 26

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 14296).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir ← Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (same chain as Ḥadīth 23). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir: thiqah fāḍil. Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh: Companion. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, nos. 3114, 6187; Muslim, no. 2131. A kunyā is an honorific name of the form Abū [name] (Father of...) or Umm [name] (Mother of...), expressing respect and affection. The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited his companions from using his own kunyā, Abū al-Qāsim, out of veneration and to prevent confusion. Al-Bukhārī also reports: “Name yourselves after me, but do not take my kunyā.” Scholars differ on whether this prohibition was specific to the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ) or extends afterward; the majority hold it was specific to his lifetime, while others maintain the prohibition as a mark of ongoing reverence. The best of names, the Prophet (ﷺ) said in other reports, are ʿAbdullāh and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (Muslim, no. 2132).
