Three-Narrator Ahadith 249
Jundub ibn Sufyān al-Bajalī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
He prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Sacrifice, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished, he found meat from sacrificial animals already slaughtered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ realized that they had been slaughtered before the prayer, so he ﷺ said, “Whoever slaughtered before we prayed, let him slaughter another in its place; and whoever has not yet slaughtered until we have prayed, let him slaughter in the name of Allah.”

Chain: ʿUbaydah ibn Ḥumayd al-Ḥadhāʾ → al-Aswad ibn Qays al-Bajalī → Jundub ibn Sufyān al-Bajalī al-ʿAlaqī (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) ʿUbaydah ibn Ḥumayd al-Laythī, known as al-Ḥadhāʾ: thiqah thabt. Died c. 190 AH. (2) Al-Aswad ibn Qays al-ʿAbdī: thiqah. (3) Jundub ibn Sufyān: Jundub ibn Sufyān al-Bajalī al-ʿAlaqī; Companion (Ṣaḥābī) of the tribe of Bajīlah who settled in Kūfah. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Aḍāḥī, bāb man dhabaḥa qabl al-ṣalāh aʿādah (5500); Muslim, Kitāb al-Aḍāḥī (1960); Abū Dāwūd (2800); al-Nasāʾī (4402). Commentary: This ḥadīth establishes the fiqh ruling that the ʿEid al-Aḍḥā sacrifice is invalid if performed before the ʿEid prayer, obligating the one who did so to repeat it, while affirming that slaughtering after the prayer, “in the name of Allah,” fulfils the sunnah correctly — a ruling upon which the four schools of fiqh are essentially agreed.
