on the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Chain: Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd → his father Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf → ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf al-Zuhrī: thiqah ḥujjah, a leading Madinan/Baghdadi scholar of ḥadīth. Died 183 or 184 AH. (2) Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf: thiqah faqīh, served as judge (qāḍī) of Madīnah. Died 125 AH (some say 127). (3) ʿAbdullāh ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib: a Companion, son of Jaʿfar al-Ṭayyār and nephew of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib; born in Abyssinia during the migration there, he was among the youngest Companions raised in the Prophet’s ﷺ household after his father’s martyrdom at Muʾtah, and died in Madīnah around 80 AH. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Aṭʿimah, bāb al-qithāʾ bi-l-ruṭab (5440); Muslim, Kitāb al-Ashribah (2043); al-Tirmidhī (1844); Ibn Mājah (3325). Commentary: This simple report of dietary practice is cited by scholars of Prophetic medicine (al-ṭibb al-nabawī), such as Ibn al-Qayyim, as an example of the Prophet’s ﷺ balancing of foods of differing natures — cucumber being cool and moist, and fresh dates warm — reflecting a broader principle of moderation and balance in diet found throughout his ﷺ practice.
