مُسْنَدُ أَبِي مَالِكٍ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 217
Sahl ibn Saʿd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I witnessed the Prophet ﷺ [preside over] a couple who performed mutual imprecation (liʿān). They invoked curses upon each other during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I was fifteen years old at that time. [The husband] said, “Messenger of Allah, if I keep her [as my wife], then I will have lied against her.” Then she gave birth to [a child who matched the description] that was disliked [by the husband, confirming the allegation].

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، سَمِعَ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ: شَهِدَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْمُتَلَاعِنَيْنِ، فَتَلَاعَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَأَنَا ابْنُ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ. قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنْ أَمْسَكْتُهَا فَقَدْ كَذَبْتُ عَلَيْهَا. قَالَ: فَجَاءَتْ بِهِ لِلَّذِي كَانَ يَكْرَهُ.

Chain: Aḥmad → Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah → al-Zuhrī → Sahl ibn Saʿd (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah ibn Mīmūn al-Hilālī al-Kūfī (d. 198 AH); thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. (2) al-Zuhrī: Muḥammad ibn Muslim ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī (d. 124 AH); thiqa mutqin faqīh ḥāfiẓ. (3) Sahl ibn Saʿd: Companion (Ṣaḥābī); Abū l-ʿAbbās al-Sāʿidī; the last Companion to die in Madinah, c. 88–91 AH. Takhrīj: Aḥmad (5/331); al-Bukhārī in Kitāb al-Ṭalāq (5259, 5308, 5315) and Kitāb al-Tafsīr for Sūrat al-Nūr (4745); Muslim in Kitāb al-Liʿān (1492). Liʿān is the procedure prescribed in Sūrat al-Nūr (24:6–9) by which a husband who accuses his wife of adultery without four witnesses averts the ḥadd punishment by swearing four times by Allah that he is truthful and adding a fifth invocation of Allah’s curse upon himself if he lies; the wife responds with four oaths and a fifth invoking divine wrath upon herself. The couple is thereafter permanently separated. Sahl’s age at the time (fifteen) is useful evidence for dating the incident to the early Madinan period. Al-Bukhārī explains that the child’s resemblance to the man accused by the husband vindicated the wife’s oaths and confirmed the husband had spoken the truth in his allegation.
