Chapter: Musnad of Abū Ḥamzah Anas ibn Mālik al-Anṣārī, the Servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

Three-Narrator Ahadith 205
ʿĀṣim [ibn Sulaymān al-Aḥwal] reported:
I asked Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the qunūt supplication is to be recited before or after the rukūʿ. He said, “Before the rukūʿ.” I said, “But some people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited it after the rukūʿ.” He said, “They are mistaken. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only recited the qunūt for one month, invoking Allah against the men who killed some of his Companions known as al-Qurrāʾ.”

Musnad Aḥmad 205

Chain: Aḥmad → Abū Muʿāwiyah → ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Abū Muʿāwiyah: Muḥammad ibn Khāzim al-Ḍarīr al-Kūfī (d. 195 AH): Thiqa ḥāfiẓ. (2) ʿĀṣim ibn Sulaymān al-Aḥwal al-Baṣrī (d. 142 AH): Thiqa. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion (Ṣaḥābī); the Prophet's ﷺ servant for ten years; d. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Aḥmad (3/167); al-Bukhārī in Kitāb al-Witr (1001–1002); Muslim in Kitāb al-Masājid (677). Al-Qurrāʾ were a group of Companions devoted to reciting and teaching the Qurʾān who were treacherously killed at Biʾr Maʿūnah in 4 AH. The ḥadīth clarifies that the qunūt performed after rukūʿ was a temporary invocation against specific aggressors, not a permanent practice; the standard position in the Witr prayer is before rukūʿ per this report, but one must consult their school of thought in the fiqh of prayer for further elaboration about the different valid methods.
