مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 203
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
One of my paternal uncles prepared a meal and said to the Prophet ﷺ, “I would like you to eat and pray in my house.” So the Prophet ﷺ came, and in the house was a palm-trunk idol. He asked to be shown a spot in one of its corners. That spot was swept and sprinkled with water, and he prayed, and we prayed with him.

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ جَارُودٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: صَنَعَ بَعْضُ عُمُومَتِي طَعَامًا، فَقَالَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَأْكُلَ فِي بَيْتِي وَتُصَلِّيَ فِيهِ. فَأَتَى، وَفِي الْبَيْتِ فَحْلٌ مِنْ تِلْكَ الْفُحُولِ. فَأَمَرَ بِنَاحِيَةٍ مِنْهُ، فَكُنِسَ وَرُشَّ، وَصَلَّى وَصَلَّيْنَا.

Chain: Aḥmad → Ibn Abī ʿAdī → ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAwn → ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn al-Mundhir ibn al-Jārūd → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Ibn Abī ʿAdī: Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Abī ʿAdī al-Baṣrī (d. 194 AH); thiqa ḥujjah. (2) ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAwn ibn Arṭabān al-Muznī al-Baṣrī (d. 151 AH): Thiqa thabt. (3) ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn al-Mundhir ibn al-Jārūd al-ʿAbdī: Maqbūl. (4) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion (Ṣaḥābī); the Prophet's ﷺ servant for ten years; d. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Aḥmad (3/128); al-Bukhārī (427) and Muslim (658) narrate the gist of this report through other chains. The ḥadīth establishes that a place of prayer may be purified by sweeping and sprinkling water even if there is a statue present in the room, provided the idol is not in the direction of prayer; the Prophet ﷺ chose a clean corner rather than departing.
