مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 193
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“Two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and he said the blessing (yarḥamuka Allāh) for one of them. Someone said to him: ‘Two men sneezed and you blessed only one of them?’ He said: ‘This one praised Allah [after sneezing], while that one did not praise Allah.’” Yaḥyā [ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān] said: “Sometimes [Sulaymān al-Taymī] said: ‘this one (hādhā)’ or words to that effect.”

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنِ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: عَطَسَ رَجُلَانِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَشَمَّتَ أَوْ سَمَّتَ أَحَدَهُمَا. فَقِيلَ لَهُ: رَجُلَانِ عَطِسَا، فَشَمَّتَّ أَحَدَهُمَا؟ فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ هَذَا حَمِدَ اللَّهَ، وَإِنَّ ذَاكَ لَمْ يَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ». قَالَ يَحْيَى: وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ: «هَذَا» أَوْ نَحْوَهُ.

Chain: Aḥmad → Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān → Sulaymān al-Taymī → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān al-Baṣrī: thiqa mutqin, d. 198 AH. (2) Sulaymān ibn Ṭarkhān al-Taymī al-Baṣrī: thiqa ʿābid, d. 143 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (6225); Muslim (2991); Abū Dāwūd (5039); al-Tirmidhī (2742); Aḥmad (12167). The report establishes that tashmīt, the response yarḥamuka Allāh, is owed to the one who praises Allah after sneezing and not offered as an automatic courtesy, so that the response is tied to an act of remembrance rather than to the sneeze itself. The Prophet ﷺ did not rebuke the man who omitted the praise but withheld the blessing, which is a form of instruction by omission. The note preserved from Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān concerning a variant demonstrative shows the transmitters' care over even the smallest verbal detail.
