Musnad Aḥmad 156

according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Chain: Aḥmad → Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna → Muḥammad ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna al-Hilālī al-Makkī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām, d. 198 AH. (2) Muḥammad ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī al-Madanī: thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām, d. 124 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (671) to (673); Muslim (558); Aḥmad (12076). The ruling addresses the case of food already served and an appetite genuinely drawn to it, since praying in that state divides the heart and diminishes khushūʿ. The scholars note that the instruction concerns the iqāmah rather than the adhān alone, that it does not license deliberately delaying the prayer beyond its time, and that Ibn ʿUmar would eat while hearing the recitation of the imam and not hurry. The rule is one of several in which the Sharīʿa removes a distraction from the worshipper rather than requiring him to contend with it.
