Three-Narrator Ahadith 116
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
A son of Abū Ṭalḥah fell ill. Abū Ṭalḥah went out to the mosque, and the boy passed away. Umm Sulaym prepared the deceased child and said to her household: “Do not let any of you tell Abū Ṭalḥah that his son has died.” He returned home with some companions from the mosque and asked: “How is the boy?” She replied: “Better than he has ever been.” She served them their supper, they ate, and the guests departed. When the last part of the night came, she said: “Abū Ṭalḥah, have you not noticed the family of so-and-so — they borrowed something, enjoyed it, and when asked to return it, they seemed reluctant?” He said: “They were not fair.” She said: “Your son was a trust from Allah ﷻ, and Allah has taken him back.” He recited innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn and praised Allah. In the morning he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when [the Prophet ﷺ] saw him he said: “May Allah bless the two of you in your night.” She conceived ʿAbdullāh and gave birth to him at night, and she was reluctant to perform taḥneek herself, wishing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to do it. Anas said: So I carried him in the early morning along with some ʿajwah dates and found [the Prophet ﷺ] branding some of his camels. I said: “O Messenger of Allah, Umm Sulaym has given birth last night and wishes the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to perform taḥneek on him.” He said: “Do you have anything with you?” I replied: “Some ʿajwah dates.” He took some of them, chewed them, then gathered his blessed saliva and placed it in the infant’s mouth, and the child began to smack his lips. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The Anṣār love dates.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, name him.” He said: “His name is ʿAbdullāh.” Reference: Musnad Aḥmad 116
