مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 115
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with one of his wives — I believe it was ʿĀʾishah — when one of the Mothers of the Believers sent her servant with a bowl of food. The [host] wife struck the servant’s hand and the bowl broke in two. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to say: “Your mother has become jealous.” He then gathered the two halves and put them together, placed the food back in them, and said: “Eat.” So they ate. He kept the servant and the broken bowl until everyone had finished eating, then he gave the servant a sound bowl [to take back] and kept the broken one in its place.

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ عِنْدَ بَعْضِ نِسَائِهِ — أَظُنُّهَا عَائِشَةَ — فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِحْدَى أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَعَ خَادِمٍ لَهَا بِقَصْعَةٍ فِيهَا طَعَامٌ، قَالَ: فَضَرَبَتِ الْأُخْرَى بِيَدِ الْخَادِمِ، فَكُسِرَتِ الْقَصْعَةُ بِنِصْفَيْنِ، قَالَ: فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «غَارَتْ أُمُّكُمْ». قَالَ: وَأَخَذَ الْكَسْرَيْنِ فَضَمَّ إِحْدَاهُمَا إِلَى الْأُخْرَى، فَجَعَلَ فِيهَا الطَّعَامَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «كُلُوا» فَأَكَلُوا. وَحَبَسَ الرَّسُولَ وَالْقَصْعَةَ حَتَّى فَرَغُوا، فَدَفَعَ إِلَى الرَّسُولِ قَصْعَةً أُخْرَى، وَتَرَكَ الْمَكْسُورَةَ مَكَانَهَا.

Takhrīj: Aḥmad (3/105), no. 12027; al-Bukhārī (2481); Muslim (2770). The Prophet’s ﷺ equitable handling of the matter — by replacing the broken bowl with one of equal value — reflects his ﷺ wisdom in resolving domestic disputes.
