Three-Narrator Ahadith 102
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “None of you should wish for death on account of some harm that has befallen him. But if he must wish for it, let him say: Allāhumma aḥyinī mā kānat al-ḥayātu khayran lī, wa tawaffanī idhā kānat al-wafātu khayran lī (O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is better for me).”

Chain: Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal → [Muḥammad] ibn Abī ʿAdiyy → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: [Muḥammad] ibn Abī ʿAdiyy: thiqa thabt. Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl: thiqa. Anas ibn Mālik: Companion. Takhrīj: Aḥmad (3/104), no. 12015; al-Bukhārī (5671); Muslim (2680). Scholars note that the prohibition is on wishing for death out of despair from worldly affliction, whereas praying for a good end with full reliance on Allah is always permitted.
