مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 78
Ismāʻīl narrated to us:
ʻAbd al-ʻAzīz narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, when he entered the privy, would say, “Aʻūdhu billāhi min al-khubthi wa-l-khabā’ith” (I seek refuge in Allah from the male and female devils).

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: كَانَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، إِذَا دَخَلَ الْخَلَاءَ قَالَ: «أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الْخُبْثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ»

Musnad Aḥmad 3/101, no. 11983. Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. It is recorded by al-Bukhārī (Ṣaḥīḥ, no. 142) and Muslim (Ṣaḥīḥ, no. 375), with closely related wording in the Sunan collections. The word al-khubth may be vocalized al-khubuth, meaning evil and impurity generally, or al-khubth, understood by many scholars as the male devils; al-khabāʾith is correspondingly understood as evil things generally or female devils. Both interpretations convey seeking Allah’s protection upon entering a place associated with physical filth and vulnerability. The supplication is said before entering the lavatory, not after one has entered and exposed oneself.
