مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 70
Muʻtamir narrated to us from Ḥumayd, from Anas, who said, “Of all people the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the most complete prayer, and the briefest.”

حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ أَتَمِّ النَّاسِ صَلَاةً وَأَوْجَزِهِم»

Musnad Aḥmad 3/100, no. 11967. Its isnād is ṣaḥīḥ according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Its meaning is established through several ṣaḥīḥ reports from Anas. He said: “I never prayed behind any imam a prayer lighter or more complete than that of the Prophet ﷺ”; he further related that the Prophet ﷺ would shorten the prayer upon hearing a child cry, out of concern that the child’s mother be distressed (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, no. 708; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, nos. 469-470). The report establishes that prophetic brevity in congregational prayer was not haste or deficiency: he ﷺ fulfilled its pillars and obligations completely while avoiding an unnecessary length that would burden those praying behind him.
