Three-Narrator Ahadith 44
Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us from ʻAmr ibn Dīnār, from Jābir ibn ʻAbdullāh, who said, “We used to practice ʻazl (coitus interruptus) during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while the Qur’ān was still being revealed.”

Musnad Aḥmad 3/309, no. 14318. The transmitters of its isnād are reliable (thiqāt), and both al-Bukhārī and Muslim have narrated from them.
ʻAzl (coitus interruptus) is the withdrawal of the husband before ejaculation as a means of avoiding conception. The clause ‘while the Qur’ān was still being revealed’ indicates that, had the practice been forbidden, the revelation would have prohibited it; its permissibility is thus established, though it was not encouraged, since it may fall short of the wife’s right and can in any case not avert what Allah has decreed.
