Three-Narrator Ahadith 28
Jābir (رضي الله عنه) reported:
“I fell ill, and the Prophet (ﷺ) came to visit me, along with Abū Bakr, both walking on foot. I was unconscious and could not speak to him. He performed wuḍūʾ and poured [the remaining water] over me, and I came around. I said: ‘O Messenger of Allāh, how should I handle my wealth when I have only sisters [as heirs]?’ He did not reply until the verse of inheritance was revealed: ‘They ask you for a legal verdict. Say: Allāh directs you regarding al-kalāla [one who leaves neither child nor father]…If a man dies without leaving a child but has a sister…’ (al-Nisāʾ, 4:176).”

Musnad Aḥmad 28

isnād meets the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 14298).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir ← Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (same chain as Ḥadīth 23). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir: thiqah fāḍil. Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh: Companion. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, nos. 194, 1446, 4577; Muslim, no. 1616; Abū Dāwūd, no. 2887; al-Tirmidhī, no. 2097; al-Nasāʾī, no. 6341. The complete verse reads: “They ask you for a legal verdict. Say: ‘Allāh directs you regarding al-kalāla. If it is a man who dies without a child, and he has a sister, she shall receive half the inheritance. And he shall be her heir if she has no child. If there are two sisters, they shall have two-thirds of the inheritance. If there are brothers and sisters, the male shall have twice the share of the female. Thus does Allāh make clear to you lest you go astray. And Allāh has knowledge of all things’“ (al-Nisāʾ, 4:176). The occasion of this revelation is preserved for us through this very ḥadīth, demonstrating how the Prophet’s (ﷺ) pastoral care for a sick companion became the occasion for divine legislation.
