(weak).
Chain: Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd → Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid → Qays ibn ʿĀʾidh, Abū Kāhil (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṭanāfisī: thiqah. (2) Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid: Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid al-Aḥmasī al-Bajalī (d. 146 AH); thiqah thabt. (3) Qays ibn ʿĀʾidh, Abū Kāhil: his Companion status and precise identity are treated with some uncertainty among the biographical critics, a number of whom note confusion in the transmission of his name and reports, which underlies the chain's weakness here despite the reliability of the two narrators above him. Takhrīj: the identification of the Abyssinian holding the reins as Bilāl ibn Rabāḥ, aligns with broader, better-established descriptions of the Farewell Sermon and other addresses in which Bilāl attended closely upon the Prophet ﷺ, as seen in Muslim's lengthy Ḥajjat al-Wadāʿ narration (1218). Commentary: Though weak, this report preserves a vivid image consistent with well-attested practice, the Prophet ﷺ delivering sermons while mounted, with a trusted companion, generally understood to be Bilāl, steadying the animal, allowing the Prophet ﷺ to address large crowds without dismounting.
