Three-Narrator Ahadith 23
Jābir (رضي الله عنه) reported:
“A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘I dreamed that my neck was struck.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Why would any of you narrate the trickery of Shayṭān [in his sleep]?’”

Musnad Aḥmad 23

isnād meets the conditions of Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 14293).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← Abū al-Zubayr ← Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (same chain as Ḥadīth 19). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. Abū al-Zubayr: ṣadūq. Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh: Companion. Takhrīj: Muslim, no. 2268; al-Nasāʾī, al-Sunan al-Kubrā, no. 7621. Disturbing or frightening dreams are understood in Islamic tradition to originate from Shayṭān (ḥulm), as opposed to true visions (ruʾyā ṣāliḥa) which come from Allāh. One is instructed not to narrate such dreams, to seek refuge from Shayṭān upon waking, to spit lightly to the left three times, and, if possible, to turn to the other side and not complete the disturbed sleep. Narrating a frightening dream to others may cause them unnecessary anxiety, which is among the harms Shayṭān seeks through such visions.
