مُسْنَدُ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ عَامِرِ بْنِ وَاثِلَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 220
Abū al-Ṭufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) reported, as narrated by al-Jurayrī:
I was circumambulating the Kaʿbah with Abū al-Ṭufayl when he said, “No one remains alive who saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except me.” I asked, “Did you truly see him?” He said, “Yes.” I asked, “What did he look like?” He said, “He was fair-skinned, handsome, and of medium build.”

حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَخْبَرَنَا الْجُرَيْرِيُّ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ أَطُوفُ مَعَ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ، فَقَالَ: مَا بَقِيَ أَحَدٌ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ غَيْرِي. قَالَ: قُلْتُ: وَرَأَيْتَهُ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ. قُلْتُ: كَيْفَ كَانَ صِفَتُهُ؟ قَالَ: «كَانَ أَبْيَضَ مَلِيحًا مُقْصِدًا»

Chain: Yazīd ibn Hārūn → Abū Masʿūd Saʿīd ibn Iyās al-Jurayrī → Abū al-Ṭufayl ʿĀmir ibn Wāthilah (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Yazīd ibn Hārūn: Yazīd ibn Hārūn ibn Zādhān al-Wāsiṭī (d. 206 AH); thiqa mutqin. (2) Al-Jurayrī, Saʿīd ibn Iyās: thiqah, though his memory became confused (ikhtalaṭa) in the final years of his life; narrations transmitted from him by his earlier students (such as Yazīd ibn Hārūn, who heard from him before the confusion set in) are unaffected and accepted. Died 144 AH. (3) Abū al-Ṭufayl: ʿĀmir ibn Wāthilah al-Laythī; Companion (Ṣaḥābī); by consensus the last Companion to die, c. 100 AH (some say 110 AH) at Makkah; saw the Prophet ﷺ as a boy. Takhrīj: descriptions of the Prophet’s ﷺ physical features are extensively collected in al-Tirmidhī’s al-Shamāʾil al-Muḥammadiyyah, and similar wording describing him as fair and of moderate stature (rabʿah, azhar) appears in al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Manāqib (3547, 3548) from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib. Commentary: As the last living Companion, Abū al-Ṭufayl’s testimony carried special weight among the Successors, who sought him out — as here, while circumambulating the Kaʿbah — to preserve first-hand memories of the Prophet’s ﷺ appearance before all direct witnesses had passed away.
