مُسْنَدُ أَبِي مَالِكٍ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 213
Sahl ibn Saʿd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I was among the people when a woman came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, this woman has given herself [in marriage] to you; consider the matter.” A man said, “Marry her to me.” The Prophet ﷺ did not respond until [the man had asked again and] she had stood up for the third time. He said to the man, “Do you have anything [to give as a dowry]?” He said, “No.” He said, “Go and find something.” He said, “I could not find anything.” He said, “Go and find something—even an iron ring.” He said, “I could not find even an iron ring.” He said, “Do you know any part of the Qurʾān [by heart]?” He said, “Yes: such-and-such a sūrah and such-and-such a sūrah.” He said, “I have married her to you for what you know of the Qurʾān.”

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَازِمٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ يَقُولُ: أَنَا فِي الْقَوْمِ إِذْ دَخَلَتِ امْرَأَةٌ، فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ، فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ. فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: زَوِّجْنِيهَا. فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ حَتَّى قَامَتِ الثَّالِثَةَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: «عِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ: لَا. قَالَ: «اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ». قَالَ: لَمْ أَجِدْ. قَالَ: «فَاذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ، وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ». قَالَ: مَا وَجَدْتُ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ. قَالَ: «هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ؟» قَالَ: نَعَمْ، سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا. قَالَ: «قَدْ أَنْكَحْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ».

Rijāl: (1) Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah ibn Mīmūn al-Hilālī al-Kūfī (d. 198 AH); thiqa ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. (2) Abū Ḥāzim: Salamah ibn Dīnār al-Aʿraj al-Madanī (d. 135 AH); thiqa ʿābid. (3) Sahl ibn Saʿd: Companion (Ṣaḥābī); Abū l-ʿAbbās al-Sāʿidī; the last Companion to die in Madinah, c. 88–91 AH. Takhrīj: Aḥmad (5/330); al-Bukhārī in Kitāb al-Nikāḥ (5029, 5030, 5087, 5121, 5132, 5141, 5149); Muslim in Kitāb al-Nikāḥ (1425). This is one of the most widely narrated ḥadīths establishing the permissibility of Quran-teaching as a dowry (ṣadāq). The majority of scholars hold that a tangible dowry—even of minimal value—is obligatory, and that the Prophet ﷺ set the man’s memorized Qurʾān as a substitute after no material item could be found.
