Three-Narrator Ahadith 21
Jābir (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said:
“A townsman must not sell on behalf of a desert-dweller. Leave the people [to transact directly]; Allāh will provide for some through others.”

isnād meets the conditions of Muslim (al-Arnaʾūṭ, no. 14291). Abū al-Zubayr here explicitly states he heard this from Jābir (samiʿtu Jābira).
Isnād and Rijāl: Imām Aḥmad ← Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna ← Abū al-Zubayr ← Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh (same chain as Ḥadīth 19). Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna: thiqah ḥāfiẓ faqīh imām. Abū al-Zubayr: ṣadūq. Jābir ibn ʿAbdillāh: Companion. Takhrīj: al-Bukhārī, nos. 2158, 2723; Muslim, no. 1522; Abū Dāwūd, no. 3440; al-Tirmidhī, no. 1223; al-Nasāʾī, no. 4499; Ibn Mājah, no. 2176. The prohibition prevents a townsman, who knows local market prices, from acting as an intermediary for an outsider (bedouin) arriving with goods to sell. Without the intermediary, the outsider will sell at natural market rates, benefiting buyers. With the intermediary inflating prices, buyers are harmed. The wisdom in “Leave the people; Allāh will provide for some through others” is that free and direct trade allows the natural price mechanism to function, distributing provisions and livelihood equitably across the market.
