Three-Narrator Ahadith 145
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Anas was asked whether the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had dyed his hair. He said: “He had no more than around seventeen or twenty white hairs visible at the front of his beard.” He added: “Grey hair was no blemish upon him.” When Anas was asked, “But is it a blemish [in others]?” he replied: “All of you dislike it. As for [the Companions]: Abū Bakr used to dye with ḥennā and katam, while ʿUmar used to dye with ḥennā.”

according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
Chain: Aḥmad → Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him). Rijāl: (1) Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdiyy al-Sulamī al-Baṣrī: thiqa thabt, d. 194 AH. (2) Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl al-Baṣrī: thiqa, d. 142 AH. (3) Anas ibn Mālik: Companion, d. ca. 93 AH. Takhrīj: Al-Bukhārī (3549); Muslim (2341); Aḥmad (12054). Katam is a plant whose leaves yield a dark dye; combined with ḥennā it produces a deep reddish black that holds longer than ḥennā alone. The report indicates that the Prophet ﷺ had remarkably few white hairs, so that the question of dyeing scarcely arose in his case, while the practice of the two Shaykhs establishes the dyeing of grey as a Sunnah of the Companions. Other narrations record the prohibition of dyeing with pure black, which the jurists reconcile with this report by distinguishing black from the reddish tone produced by ḥennā and katam.
