Three-Narrator Ahadith 143
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Umm Sulaym sent me with a basket of fresh dates to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but I did not find him at home. He had recently gone to a freed slave of his who had invited him and prepared food for him. I went to him and found him eating; he invited me to eat with him. [The freed slave] had made tharīd for him with meat and gourd, and [I noticed] the Prophet ﷺ was particularly delighted by the gourd, so I began to gather pieces of it and place them near him. When he had finished eating he returned to his home, and I placed the basket of dates before him. He proceeded to eat from them and distribute them [to those present] until the last of them was finished.

Musnad Aḥmad 143

Tharīd is a dish of bread crumbled into meat broth, counted among the most nourishing foods of Arabia and praised in the well-known comparison of ʿĀʾisha's merit among women to that of tharīd among foods. The Prophet's ﷺ fondness for gourd (al-qarʿ, the bottle gourd or marrow) is reported through several routes, and jurists derive from this account the propriety of accepting an invitation, of a guest's attentiveness to what his host loves, and of a master honouring the invitation of his freedman.
