مُسْنَدُ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ خَادِمِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
Three-Narrator Ahadith 104
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
When the Prophet ﷺ was resident [in Madīnah], he would observe iʿtikāf during the last ten nights of Ramaḍān. However, if he was traveling [during Ramaḍān], he would observe iʿtikāf for twenty nights the following year.

حدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: «كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا كَانَ مُقِيمًا اعْتَكَفَ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ، وَإِذَا سَافَرَ اعْتَكَفَ مِنَ الْعَامِ الْمُقْبِلِ عِشْرِينَ».
قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ [بْنُ أَحْمَدَ]: قَالَ أَبِي: «لَمْ أَسْمَعْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ إِلَّا مِنْ ابْنِ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ».

Chain: Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal → [Muḥammad] ibn Abī ʿAdiyy → Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl → Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) → the Prophet ﷺ. Rijāl: [Muḥammad] ibn Abī ʿAdiyy: thiqa thabt. Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl: thiqa. Anas ibn Mālik: Companion. Iʿtikāf is the act of secluding oneself in a mosque during the last ten nights of Ramaḍān with the intention of drawing closer to Allah ﷻ. Takhrīj: Aḥmad (3/104), no. 12017; Aḥmad himself remarked that this chain is the sole ṭarīq for the twenty-night iʿtikāf wording; Abū Dāwūd in Kitāb al-Ṣawm (2463); al-Tirmidhī (803). The iʿtikāf compensating a missed year is reported in various forms from the Prophet ﷺ.
