Jami` at-Tirmidhi
Ismāʿīl b. Mūsā al-Fazārī, the grandson (son of the daughter) of al-Suddī, al-Kūfī narrated to us; he said:
ʿUmar b. Shākir narrated to us, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There will come upon people a time in which the one who holds firm to his religion will be like one clutching a live coal.”

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُوسَى الفَزَارِيُّ ابْنُ بِنْتِ السُّدِّيِّ الكُوفِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ شَاكِرٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ:
«يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ الصَّابِرُ فِيهِمْ عَلَى دِينِهِ كَالْقَابِضِ عَلَى الْجَمْرِ».

The narrators (rijāl):
Ismāʿīl b. Mūsā al-Fazārī: "Truthful, but errs" (ṣadūq yukhṭiʾ). ʿUmar b. Shākir: Weak (ḍaʿīf). Anas b. Mālik: (a Companion).
Al-Tirmidhī's own remark: Abū ʿĪsā (al-Tirmidhī) said: This is a strange (gharīb) ḥadīth by this route. ʿUmar b. Shākir was narrated from by more than one of the people of knowledge, and he was a Baṣran shaykh.
Corroborating narrations (shawāhid) that strengthen it:
Abū Thaʿlaba al-Khushanī (marfūʿ): "…for behind you are days of patience, in which holding firm is like grasping a live coal…" - al-Tirmidhī (no. 3150), who called it ḥasan gharīb; graded ṣaḥīḥ by Ibn Ḥibbān (no. 1850). Its chain has some weakness (ʿUtba b. Abī Ḥakīm - ṣadūq who errs much; ʿAmr b. Jāriya al-Lakhmī - maqbūl; Abū Umayya al-Shaʿbānī —-maqbūl).
Abū Hurayra (marfūʿ): "The one holding firm to his religion on that day is like one clutching a live coal." - Aḥmad (5/390–391); its chain contains Ibn Lahīʿa (ṣadūq who became confused after his books were burned).
ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd (marfūʿ): "…days of patience are ahead, holding firm therein is like grasping a coal; the one who acts [rightly] then has the reward of fifty…" - reported by al-Bazzār and al-Ṭabarānī; al-Bazzār's narrators are those of the Ṣaḥīḥ except Sahl b. ʿĀmir al-Bajalī, whom Ibn Ḥibbān declared reliable (Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid 7/282).
Overall verdict: Although this specific chain is weak, the ḥadīth is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) by virtue of these supporting witnesses, and Allah knows best.
